Vi Business C-DoT IoT Lab: Simplifying IoT deployments
The digital era has seen IoT driving unparalleled innovation, with its potential to transform industries, homes, and cities. By 2025, over 30 billion connected devices are expected globally (GSMA, 2023), spanning sectors like smart homes, healthcare, agriculture, and industrial automation. However, this rapid growth presents key challenges:
- Interoperability: Diverse devices and protocols delay over 40% of IoT projects (GSMA, 2023).
- Network Compatibility: Around 30% of devices face integration issues (Ericsson, 2023).
- Security Concerns: 70% of IoT devices remain vulnerable to cybersecurity threats (Cisco, 2023).
- Fragmented Ecosystem: Gaps in firmware or SIM compatibility hinder seamless deployments.
These issues emphasise the need for robust end-to-end testing of IoT solutions. Traditional cellular testing suffices for phones; but IoT devices like smart meters or trackers, demand tailored tests to ensure functionality, reliability, and security - minimising costly field failures.
Overview of Certification Types for IoT
Certification requirements for devices used for IoT fall into three distinct categories, illustrated with examples:

Level 1 and 2 are mandated in India and are essential requirements for the IoT devices or any other network devices sold in India. However, Vi C-DOT IoT Lab is the first to roll out Operator-level certification in India to enable IoT service providers to deploy a ‘Network ready’ and interoperable solution. Vi Business is the industry’s first to build such a proposition in India with a Public-Private partnership.
Introducing Vi Business C-DoT IoT Lab- Pioneering Network-Ready IoT solutions
The GSMA's ‘IoT Device Certification Landscape’ highlights telecom operator certification as a crucial requirement for ensuring that IoT devices meet quality, security, and network compatibility standards. This process fosters smoother integration, better user experiences, and a trusted IoT framework for widespread adoption.
Emerging technologies like NB-IoT and 5G demand device customisation for specific network configurations. Addressing this, the Vi Business C-DOT IoT Lab, a joint initiative with CDOT, leverages combined expertise to create robust test plans. The lab validates network performance, interoperability, and end-to-end solution readiness through comprehensive testing.
Key focus areas include:
- Network Performance: Tests ensure devices are optimised for deployment, including outdoor field simulations.
- Interoperability: Rigorous evaluations ensure seamless communication across diverse systems.
- End-to-End Validation: The lab identifies compatibility issues between solution components often overlooked in isolated tests.
As of today, the Vi Business C-DoT IoT lab has tested 70+ devices, issued 23 certificates and have addressed hundreds of field issues that the customer has faced, both while the IoT device is stationary and on the move.
Benefits to the customer:
Certified devices meet stringent standards, instilling trust and accelerating IoT growth in India.
